Reddening and bleaching of Aztec Sandstone due to the reactions between fluid flow and compaction bands at high-angle to bedding (lower dune in the foreground) and compaction bands sub-parallel to bedding (upper dune in the background). The Jurassic Aztec Sandstone is an aeolian sandstone exposed in Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada. Deng et al. 2017 (Petroleum Geoscience, 23, 223–230) discuss the fluid-flow effects of compartmentalized distribution of compaction bands of various orientations.
